Tommy Duncan, a founding member of "The Texas Playboys", was born near Whitney in 1911. As part of the group headed by band leader Bob Wills, Tommy was known as both a songwriter and a vocalist.
Tommy got his start as a member of the "Light Crust Doughboys" in 1932. He played piano, guitar, and bass.
Except for one, Tommy was featured on vocals on every hit song from the Texas Playboys. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the Texas Music Hall of Fame.

The Tommy Duncan and Western Swing Museum features many items from Tommy's life, as well as artifacts from American Western swing bands. Among the items on display are Tommy's hat and boots, numerous old 78 records, documents, and Duncan family photos.

On the Saturday nearest Tommy's birthday, January 11, the "Tommy Duncan Western Swing Celebration" is held to celebrate his life and music. Called by some the "greatest Western swing event of the year", it brings together friends, family, and fans of Tommy for a day-long celebration. Western swing bands highlight the event, along with a catered dinner.
